Estonian Independence Day & Growing Cornflower at Home

Estonian Independence Day & Growing Cornflower at Home

Celebrating Estonian independence

What makes Estonia beautiful?

There are so many answers to that question. Glorious nature, clean air and being one of the most tech-savvy countries in the world are just the beginning. Estonia is also the birthplace of Click & Grow.

All of Click & Grow’s indoor gardens and plant pods are produced on the Estonian island of Hiiumaa, which is one of the cleanest, most well-conserved places on earth. The island is currently home to over 1000 species of vascular plants, with nearly 100 of those being under protection.

As Estonian Independence Day approaches, it’s an opportunity to celebrate the country’s declaration of independence. Between 1917 and 1920, Estonia was involved in a battle for independence from the Russian Empire. On February 24th, 1918, Estonia declared statehood, which is remembered and celebrated each year as a national holiday.

Cornflower as a national symbol

Cornflower has been growing on Estonian soil for thousands of years but it was officially made a national symbol in 1968. It’s commonly found in rye fields, creating a meaningful association in the minds of Estonians between the flower and their daily bread. The blue in Estonia’s flag has also been described affectionately as ‘cornflower blue’.

How to grow cornflower at home

Cornflower is a visual treat. Its soft blue flowers can add a touch of tranquility to your home and it’s very easy to grow. With a Click & Grow smart garden, it’s as simple as popping in a cornflower plant pod and letting the garden’s technology do the work.

The garden will automatically water the plants and provide them with an optimal cycle of light. The smart soil in the pod will ensure that cornflower receives all the nutrients it needs.

When growing cornflower in a smart garden, you can expect it to sprout within 2 weeks. It’s first flowers appear around 5 weeks after planting. The ideal room temperature in which to grow cornflower is 18°C – 24°C. It requires very little care at all - simply remove withered flowers when necessary as this will promote the growth of new ones.

In addition to its visual appeal, cornflower is edible. It’s sometimes used to make tea or to garnish meals. For inspiration, check out this Estonian inspired crème brûlée recipe featuring cornflower.
